Biography

Soph Ziemian earned their B.S. and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University and their Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Cornell University under Dr. Marjolein van der Meulen. Their doctoral research investigated the role of subchondral bone in post-traumatic osteoarthritis development, and explored its potential as a therapeutic target for disease modifying therapies. Dr. Ziemian continued at Cornell in 2020 as a postdoctoral associate, examining the distinction between beneficial and damaging mechanical loading in relation to joint damage and osteoarthritis. They were later appointed jointly as a Visiting Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering, and given the opportunity to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate level courses. During their Ph.D. and postdoc, Dr. Ziemian also enjoyed teaching and mentoring outside of the classroom while serving as an undergraduate research mentor and an assistant track and cross country coach at Cornell.
