Senior Project Options
BMED students have multiple options for their 400-level upper division design coursework. Each of these sequences of courses also includes the planning, execution, and documentation of your senior project as part of a team of students. Each sequence covers similar engineering design core content with varied scope and emphasis as described below. Duration of the projects, quarters offered, and total units obtained are different for each sequence and should be taken into account when planning your schedule and assessing your progress to degree completion.
Team based senior design project open to BMED majors only. Engineering design methodology, design process, project planning, decision making, modeling, construction, and testing of an open-ended design project. Preparation of formal engineering reports. Statistical analysis. Governmental regulations. Bioethical issues.
- Duration: 2 sequential quarters
- Offered: 2 cohorts per year (F/W and W/Sp)
- Courses: BMED 455 Biomedical Engineering Design I, BMED 456 Biomedical Engineering Design II: Senior Project
- Units: 4 units per quarter (2 lectures, 2 labs per week)
- 8 units total
Team based interdisciplinary senior design project with students from multiple engineering majors. Development of sponsor’s needs and generation of design solutions. Project management, cost analysis, intellectual property, test plans, impact analysis on society, and ethical considerations. Activities focus on detail design, analysis and material procurement. Design verified through prototyping and testing.
- Duration: 3 sequential quarters
- Offered: 1 sequence per year (F/W/Sp)
- Courses: ENGR 459 Interdisciplinary Senior Design Project I, ENGR 460 Interdisciplinary Senior Design Project II, ENGR 461 Interdisciplinary Senior Design Project III, BMED 400 Special Problems for Advanced Undergraduates
- Units: 2 units per quarter (2 labs per week) = 6 units for ENGR 459-461 + 2 units of BMED 400
- 8 units total
